Dell readies its first AMD Fusion laptop the 699 Inspiron M102z

Most of Dell’s laptop lineup is Intel-based, but the Inspiron M100 series appears to be saved for its AMD notebook forays. It already sells the Inspiron M101z with an Athlon II processor, and now it appears to be adding its first AMD Fusion portable in the form of the M102z.

For $699, the M102z will come with a 1.6GHz E-350 Fusion Zacate processor and Radeon HD 6310 graphics, along with a 11.6-inch screen (1,366×768 resolution) and 4GB of RAM. You can also get a cheaper version ($599) with a 1GHz CPU, or bump things up to $759 with a built-in TV tuner.

While it won’t necessarily provide the same performance as an Intel Core i3 mobile processor, the E-350 has garnered high marks in other systems  as an alternative to an Intel Atom-based netbook. Dell’s entry confirms that AMD has a successful mobile offering right out of the gate with Fusion, as we await more powerful laptop processors using the new platform.

Power Jacks/DC sockets Ever moved the laptop and forgot you had it plugged in to the mains? Had it on your lap an the dogs tripped on the cable stretched across the room? Or the kids been tugging on it to get a go of the latest game?

Every time the power cable is pulled against the socket on the laptop it stresses the solder joins that connect the socket to the mainboard inside, if these break at any time, even a fine crack will case problems your laptop will stop charging and eventually switch off when the battery power runs down. Usually if your lucky and the break isnt too bad you can move the plug into a certain position and hey presto the power is back on (Ill come back to this later). Other times no amount of wiggling around of the plug will help and youll have to get it repaired. Worse still the centre pin of the socket breaks and the whole socket needs replacing. If any of the above happen to you, forget phoning the manufacturer to have it repaired under warranty, they wont cover it, they class it as misuse, and theyll probably quote you for a new motherboard, in a lot of cases costing nearly as much as the laptop itself. Still theres always accidental damage cover on your home insurance. Youve got some havent you? Worst comes to the worst just search for "power socket repairs" on your favourite search engine, there are plenty of independent laptop repair companies that will glady resolder a new socket for a lot less.

Going back to the slightly loose socket that when you wiggle the plug you can make it work scenario, lets take a moment to have a look at whats happening here. The fact that it works when the socket is in a specific position tells us that the break in the solder connection is now connected, and when in another position its disconnected, so what happens when we move it around, well each time we make the connection by wiggling, we cause a spark to arc across the break, which in turn causes heat to build up and a certain amount of burning to occur. Eventually what will happen is that the arcing will cause a hole to be burnt in the systemboard where the solder join is and one day it just wont turn on anymore and the likelyhood is that it will then need the systemboard replacing. The moral here is get it looked at and put right sooner rather than later.

How to repair broken touchpad connector on laptop motherboard:
In this post I explain how to repair broken touchpad cable connector on laptop motherboard.
Let’s say you were fixing a laptop yourself and accidentally damaged the touchpad connector or any other similar connector. The problem is the touchpad connector soldered to the motherboard and it’s impossible to replace it with regular soldering tools. Also, these connectors are not sold separately which makes the replacement even more impossible.
Well, the connector is broken and cannot be replaced. Let’s try to repair it. We’ll do it using the same technique as for fixing the broken keyboard connector.
On the following picture you see a typical laptop touchpad connector. The connector has а white base (permanently attached to the motherboard) and locking tab (moving part).
In order to unlock the connector you lift up the left side of the locking tab. The locking tap opens up at a 90 degree angle and releases the touchpad cable. After that you pull the cable from the connector.


On the following picture you see a broken touchpad connector. I wasn’t careful enough and separated the locking tab from the connector base.
Unfortunately there is no way to attached broken tab back to the base.

Here’s how I fixed the broken connector.

Insert the touchpad cable back into the connector. The touchpad cable has contacts on the bottom side – the side which is facing the motherboard.
In order to work properly the cable contacts have to touch contacts inside the connector but it’s not happening when the locking tab is missing.

Find a small piece of plastic. It has to fit inside the connector and be thick enough to fit tightly between the four metal hinges and touchpad cable.
Insert this piece of plastic into the connector. At the same time make sure the touchpad cable also inserted into the connector.

On the following picture you see the touchpad cable seated tightly inside the connector.
The piece of plastic applies pressure on the touchpad cable and it makes good connection with contacts inside the connector. The touchpad works again!
Now you can secure the connection with sticky electrical tape.
This simple trick fixed my touchpad.

Here’s another type of touchpad connector.

The locking tab is broken and also separated from the connector base.

Position the broken tab the way it was plugged in before but do not push it into the connector yet.

Now insert the touchpad cable. In most cases it goes under the locking tab.
Push the cable all the way into the connector.

While holding the cable, push the locking tab into the connector.
Even though the locking tab is broken, it should secure the tochpad cable.
Again, apply some sticky electrical tape over the connection to secure it.

Installing internal wireless card into an older laptop:
This tutorial explains how you can install internal wireless card into an older laptop. I assume that your laptop is “wireless ready” which means it has a slot for the wireless card and equipped with wireless antennas, but missing the wireless card. Why did I make this tutorial for an older laptop? Because all new laptops are sold with the wireless card.

I’ll take as an example my Dell Latitude C840 laptop. As you see on the picture, it has a slot for the wireless card and one antenna cable. That’s strange, most laptops have two antenna cables, white and black. One cable goes to the main connector on the wireless card, another cable goes to the auxiliary connector. Probably you’ll ask me which antenna cable connects to which connector? I think it doesn’t really matter because both antenna cable are identical.




My main concern was finding the right device driver for the wireless card I plan to install into my laptop. As you know, without correct driver it will not be recognized by the operating system and will not work at all.

Likely, I have a spare wireless card from another not working Toshiba laptop and this card worked perfectly.

You can find this wireless card by the model number: WM3B2200BG. Just search by the model number here and you’ll find one for about $20. It’s a 802.11 b/g wireless card, so you’ll get a 54Mbp/s connection as I did.

In order to install the wireless card into the slot, just push it into the slot at a 30 degree angle (step 1) and then press on the card (step 2) until it’s locked.

After the card is locked in the slot you can connect the antenna cable. In my case, I snapped the antenna cable on the main connector. If you have two antenna cables, snap one of them on the main connector on the wireless card and another one on the auxiliary connector. As I mentioned before, I don’t think it matters with cable goes to which connector. Both antenna cables are identical.
Finally, you’ll have to download and install the wireless card driver. If you use the same card as I did (WM3B2200BG), you can download driver from the Intel website here.

Use this link: Intel® PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection. Select the operating system, download and install the driver.

You have a couple of different options:

1. Download and install the driver only. Use this option if you want to use Windows wireless connection utility. That’s what I did because I prefer using Windows tools.

2. Download and install both the wireless card drive and the connection software. Use this option if you want to use Intel’s software application. It’s totally up to you.

As you see on the picture above, the wireless card successfully connected to the wireless access point at 54Mbp/s.

Laptop Black Screen Hardware Faulty

Hello guys,

I will guide your through this problem. Now we assuming there is hardware faulty.

Cause :

1) Due to constant opening and closing the lid, your screen cable maybe damaged.

2) The connector might loose.

Where is the place of these connection???

Above keyboard, under your laptop speaker, and runs by the side of the screen hinge up to the back of the screen and connect at the top.


Before we get started, you should know the following :
Basically, the cable runs between the base of the laptop and the back of the screen and there are about thirty tiny wires wrapped up with tape. When I took my laptop to bits I removed this cable and re attached x4 broken wires using additional super fine wire ply and tape. The ideal would be to solder the new wire. My tip is to burn away the wire casing using a match/ cigarette lighter very briefly then rub off the plastic to expose the wire using finger and thumb.

*** If you dont have the skill level to repair broken wires then simply buy a new screen cable, when you open the laptop up there is a code under sticker on the cable. You can buy them from any good HP spare parts retailer ***

Know how to remove the damage cable? If not, please follow the instruction below :

1. Remove the battery and power cable.

2. Remove all the rubber pads from the inside of the screen to expose screws (x5) -Please dont unscrew!

3. Tip the laptop over and remove x6 sliver screws from within the battery compartment. (These screws hold on the speaker cover above the keyboard that also houses the quickplay buttons volume and power button)

4. Very carefully using a flat blade screwdriver prise off the speaker cover around the left and right hand side of notebook. DO NOT PULL COMPLETELY OFF THIS COVER UNTIL YOU UNPLUG THE ATTACHED QUICKPLAY WIRE !!!

 5. Once this speaker cover is completely removed then you will see x2 hinge covers that are kept in place with a screw on each. Remove each of the screws then gently prise off the hinge covers being very careful not to disturb the wires that run around them.

6. Next is to remove the inner screen cover surround. All the screws should already be exposed, remove them all now and them very carefully prise the casing off using a flat blade screwdriver.

7. At this point you will now see additional screws attaching the lcd screen to its mounting plate X3 at each bottom corner and x2 at the top. Remove all of these screws and this will allow access to the back of the lcd screen.

8. You now need to remove the cable which should be in plain view front and back. Firstly disconnect from above the keyboard using a screwdriver to gently prise off the clip. Next remove the plug from the inverter (a long strip of circuit board that runs at the bottom on the screen. Only disconnect the left hand end that connects to the screen cable. Once these two have been released, go around the back of the screen (helps to gently move the screen hinge forward for this bit. Remove the celloptape that holds the bottom of the cable in place, then remove the plug at the top of the screen by firsly removing the holding tape. Be very gently and pull out using both hands gently wriggly out the socket.

*** Friendly note : Please wear anti-static wrist strap when you work with laptop component, because electrostatic will damage your laptop permanently.***

At this point the cable should be free and can be gently removed from the note book for either repair or replacement. Repair is quite simple if you are handy with electronics but beware, the cables inside the black tape wrap are very very small. It is delicate work. If you cant fix then replace by quoting the code number on the cable sticker.

Refitting is the opposite of the removal, just remember to be very careful with the cable placement and when starting to open and close the lid again, do it very slowly the first time to ensure no part of the cable is trapped.
